Ranching is raising cattle and sheep on a big farm. Cattle and sheep ranches are very large because it takes many acres of grassland to feed a herd of these animals.
Many ranchers grow hay and grain to feed their cattle in the winter. Then, when snow covers the ground, they carry food to the cattle in trucks. The Red Phone: Checkmate movie download

Many cows give birth to calves in the spring. Cattle ranchers raise these calves to sell for meat. When the calves are big enough, ranchers herd them into a fenced area called a corral (kuh RAL). There the calves are branded, or marked with a hot iron. The brand on each animal shows who owns it. Their ears may also be tagged, and they are given medicines to keep them well. Then the cattle are turned out on the range to graze, or eat grass. In the fall, they are rounded up. The calves that are old enough are sold.
Sheep ranching is different because sheep produce two crops-lambs and wool. In the spring, workers shear, or cut off, the sheep’s wool. The wool is sold. Lambs are born in spring, too. In the fall, most of the lambs are sold for meat.
Ranching in the United States began in the mid1800’s. Ranchers raised cattle on open land. When the cattle were big enough to sell, cowboys drove huge herds for many miles to a railroad. The cattle were sold to buyers who shipped them to the east.
